A new client from St. Louis contacted JML Audio about adding a custom-installed laser and radar detector to his 2015 Infiniti Q50 sedan. Our team scheduled the client for a consultation at our facility so we could look over the car with him and get to knows his goals for the upgrades. When he arrived, we spent significant time on listening as he told us how he used the car and what he hoped to gain by adding one of our laser and radar defense systems. We also went out to the vehicle itself to explore ideas.
During our conversation, the topic of adding a remote starter to the vehicle came up, so we explored ideas for that as well. At the end of our meeting, we worked up a proposal for the client that we felt best suited his needs. He liked our ideas so we arranged a time for him to drop off his vehicle.
K40 High Performance System
For this Q50, we chose the K40 RL360i system because it is the highest-performing system on the market today. It combines a front radar receiver and a rear radar receiver, so the driver knows which direction a threat is coming from. For laser protection, we added one G5 laser defuser in the front of the vehicle and a second one in the rear. Going with this combination of sensors gives the client 360 degrees of protection.
One of the greatest features of the K40 system is its ability to differentiate between a radar threat and a radar-based distance cruise control system that is popular on many modern vehicles. These cruise control systems use K Band-based radar that causes a detector to send a false response. When you are driving on a crowded road, it can become very annoying, making you want to turn off your system. The good news is that K40 has developed software that can detect and ignore cruise control-based radar while keeping your system at peak capacity for any radar threats.
Best Practice Installations By JML Audio
While it is very important to choose a great-quality product when buying a custom-installed laser and radar detector, it is equally important that you choose a shop that will do an installation designed to maximize your protection from a ticket. Many shops will cut corners to get the installation done faster, resulting in poorer performance and a higher likelihood of breakage. The good news is that JML Audio is nationally known for the quality and expertise of our installations. We have even given seminars for radar manufacturers on best practice methods to employ when installing these systems.
Front Protection
In the front of the vehicle, we begin by custom-machining an aluminum mount for the radar receiver behind the factory grille in the optimum position while completely hiding it, giving the vehicle a stealth look. We flush-mounted the front laser defuser into a black license plate frame, putting it in a great location while making it practically invisible.
Rear Protection
In the rear of the vehicle, our team used the same approach for the sensors, machining a custom mount to hold the radar receiver and putting it behind the rear bumper in a hidden location. We flushed-mounted the rear laser defuser into a license plate frame, just as we did with the front sensor.
Laser Protection, Not Just Detection
One very important distinction of our custom-installed systems is the use of laser defusers, not laser receivers. A portable detector and many custom-installed detectors use laser receivers, which are useless from a protection standpoint. When your vehicle is shot by a laser gun at 300 yards, the beam pattern is only about 3 feet wide and can’t be detected by anyone other than the vehicle they were aimed at. That means, unlike having radar, you can’t detect someone in front of you or behind you getting shot, which would give you an opportunity to slow down. Our laser defusers are cutting-edge technology and they do protect you from a laser threat. When your vehicle is shot with laser, the sensors immediately fire back powerful beams of light at the operator, and they don’t get a reading on you. Now, you have time to slow down and avoid a costly ticket.
Custom Indicators
Once we finished the exterior, we turned our attention to the interior installation. We hid the front and rear detection lights behind the turn signal indicators in the dash. When the client gets a threat from the front of the vehicle, the left turn signal flashes blue; when a threat from the rear exists, the right turn signal will flash blue.
Controller And USB Port
We fabricated a custom mount to hold the controller inside the ashtray, along with a USB charging port for his portable electronic devices.
Testing The Infiniti Q50 Radar System For Operation
Once an install is complete, we actually test our systems with in-house radar and laser devices to ensure the vehicle is operating at peak performance when it leaves our shop.
Custom Remote Starter
While the vehicle was in our care, we installed a remote starter that works through the factory remote control. Now the client can warm up his car in the winter and cool it down in the summer by simply pressing some buttons on the factory remote.
