A repeat client from Earth City with a 2016 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S contacted JML Audio about getting a custom-installed laser and radar detector. Our team set him up for a consultation appointment so he could stop by our facility and have an uninterrupted meeting with us. This allows us to take all the time needed to get to know the client and his expectations and goals, and look over the vehicle together. When we were done meeting with him, we worked up a proposal that we thought best suited his needs. He liked our proposal, so we set up a time for him to drop off his vehicle.
K40 Protection
If you have ever driven a Cayenne Turbo, or even read about one, you know they are fast. Really fast. In the blink of an eye, you can be going much faster than you ever anticipated. For this reason, we installed the K40 RL360i expert system for this client. It includes both front and rear radar receivers for the ultimate in protection.
Securely Mounted Radar Receivers
In usual JML fashion, we fabricated custom aluminum mounts to hold the radar receivers. Many shops resort to screwing receivers into plastic or, even worse, using double-sided tape to mount the radar receivers. When you are making a sizable investment in your vehicle, you want to know the install is done properly, and you want all the performance you can get out of the system. Our team looks at every vehicle differently and mounts every radar receiver in a hidden location for a stealth appearance that will also optimize performance. This is one of the reasons that radar detector manufacturers ask us to do trainings for their dealers at national events.
Laser Defusers
Any good radar defense system needs laser protection, and the K40 G5 defusers are incredible in the protection they offer the driver. Laser and radar work very differently when it comes to speed detection. A radar gun shoots a wide swath of radar waves, and a good radar receiver can pick up vehicles in front of you being targeted so you have time to avoid a ticket. Laser is completely different – it is a narrow beam of light shot at an individual vehicle. You won’t know laser is being used until it is aimed at your vehicle and then it is too late – unless you own a K40 G5!
While it is true that the K40 system is a laser sensor, what is important to know is that it is a defuser. When your vehicle is shot with laser, the G5 instantly fires back powerful beams of light that the laser gun doesn’t understand, so it doesn’t get a reading. You now have that precious time needed to slow down and avoid a ticket.
We mounted the front G5 laser defuser in the center of the vehicle, aimed precisely at the road ahead. In the rear of the vehicle, we used a license plate frame mount that we color-matched to the vehicle.
Visual Warning Indicators And Controller
Next we turned our attention to the product being installed inside the vehicle. K40 uses indicators to tell the driver whether the alert is coming from the front or the rear. We hid the blue indicator lights inside the turn signal indicators in the instrument cluster. When driving up the road, the instrument cluster looks 100% original, but should an alert come from the front, the left indicator blinks blue. If a threat comes from the rear, the right turn signal indicator blinks blue. As an added alert, we mount a speaker securely for audible notifications in a completely hidden location in the vehicle.
When the driver needs to make any changes to his K40 system, he simply opens up the ashtray on his Porsche to reveal the Expert series controller. For even more control, the installation team at JML Audio designed a custom mute button that we flushed into the center console near the grab handle.
In-House Testing
Once we finish an installation, we go the extra step by testing the radar and laser system with our in-house diagnostic equipment.
Sound Proofing
In our discussions with the client, the subject of road noise came up. We quieted down the interior of the vehicle by adding our Stage Two environmental package in the front doors and our Stage One environmental package in the rear doors.
Client Loved His Porsche Cayenne Radar And Laser System
At the end of every installation, you know if you hit the mark based on the customer’s reaction to the vehicle. In this case, the client loved our work. He marveled at the fit and finish, and how everything looked like a factory Porsche option.
