A repeat client from Springfield contacted JML Audio of St. Louis about several upgrades, including laser and radar protection, for his 2016 Chevy Tahoe. We set up a time for him to stop by our facility with his vehicle so we could look it over with him. When he arrived, we explored ideas for a custom-installed Tahoe laser and radar system, paint protection film, and heat-reflective window film. In typical JML fashion, we gave him a tour of the whole facility so he could see some of our other work in progress and some of our completed vehicles. At the end of our time together, we worked up a proposal that he liked, so we set a time for him to drop off his Tahoe.
Tahoe Radar and Laser Protection by K40
For this Chevy, we chose the K40 RL360i system, which includes front and rear radar receivers. It gives the driver a much better indication of where a radar threat is coming from, so wiser decisions can be made. In a vehicle with only a front receiver, you could go from one radar trap into another without even knowing it, and end up with a ticket.
Front And Rear Radar Protection
In the front of the vehicle, we bolted the radar receiver securely into the vehicle using one of our custom machined mounting brackets. In the rear of the vehicle, we bolted the receiver into an existing bracket. We placed both sensors in optimum positions based on radar reception while keeping a completely stealth, hidden look. We neatly loomed and properly secured all the wiring for easy servicing in the future, and soldered all connections, applying heat-shrink for the ultimate in durability.
Laser Defusers Front And Rear
When it came time for laser defusers, we chose a pair of the K40 G5s up front, installing them through slots in the grille, again using custom-machined metal mounting brackets. In the rear of the vehicle, we went with a single G5 defuser mounted at the bottom of the license plate.
One very important thing to know is that placement and aiming of a laser defuser is critical. Since it is a direct beam of light, the defuser has to clearly “see” the laser beam being fired at it to fire back the defusing signal that prevents the laser operator from reading your speed. JML Audio owns diagnostic equipment that we use at the end of every install to properly test the functionality of the system.
Hidden Placement Of Alert Warning LEDs
Moving on to the inside of the vehicle, we had to pick a spot for the threat indicator lights. The install team disassembled the instrument cluster of the Tahoe and inserted the lights inside the turn signal indicators. When there is no threat, the cluster looks completely stock. Should a threat come from the front, the left indicator flashes blue; in the event of a rear threat, the right indicator flashes blue. The client also has a hidden speaker that audibly announces any threat and is used to change settings for the system. We placed the remote control for the system conveniently in a closable pocket under the factory radio.
Paint Protection To Keep It Looking Forever New
During our conversation with the client, the topic of paint protection film came up. He liked the idea of protecting the investment in his exterior paint. We applied our film to the whole hood, front bumper, fenders, side mirrors, door trim, hatch openings, and headlights. This combination of areas will help to ensure his black paint job looks beautiful several years down the road, protecting his vehicle from road rash and minor parking lot bumps and bruises.
Comprehensive Heat-Rejecting and UV Protection Film
We applied our heat-reflective window film to all the windows in the vehicle, including our clear film on the windshield and the sunroof. Treating all of the glass in the vehicle eliminates 99% of the sun’s harmful UV rays from making it into the vehicle, protecting the occupants from potential life-threatening skin cancer. The other major benefit is a significant reduction in the sun’s IR heat rays, keeping the vehicle much cooler inside on those hot, muggy days.
Detail Job To Wrap Things Up
As a final step, we did a full-service detail job on the Tahoe, making it look like the day it rolled off the assembly line.
