A repeat client from Creve Coeur contacted JML Audio of St. Louis about a 2016 Tesla P85D laser and radar detector that he wanted custom-installed. Our team set up a time for him to stop by with the car so we could get to know him better, as well as look over the vehicle. When he arrived, we spent significant time on learning how he used the vehicle and his goals for the upgrades. Our staff offered our insights along with some other upgrades he might find beneficial. At the end of our consultation, we worked up a proposal that the client liked, so he dropped off the vehicle and work began.
Incredible Vehicles Call For Incredible Products
If you have ever driven a Tesla, you know how quickly these vehicles can go from zero to really fast. Because the Tesla is electric, there are no speed cues from the engine to let you know you are going fast. Adding a custom-installed laser and radar detector system just makes sense. These vehicles are very different from a normal car, but fortunately, the staff at JML Audio knows these cars well.
For this project, we chose the K40 RL360i Expert system for a multitude of reasons. We love giving our clients front and rear radar receivers, so the driver has more accurate information about the threat. We also chose front and rear laser defusers for the ultimate in protection.
We began by removing the front and rear bumpers to give us optimum mounting options. Unlike most shops, we don’t mount our sensors to plastic body panels, because that results in substandard performance.
Front Sensor Placement Is Key
In the front of the Tesla, we installed the radar receiver on a custom metal mount bolted securely to the vehicle. This allowed us to completely hide the sensor, yet put it in the best location from a sensitivity standpoint. Our team also mounted two G5 laser defusers on custom brackets that made them almost invisible to the naked eye.
Since laser works very differently from radar, the mounting design and location are critical. Laser is a beam of light aimed directly at your vehicle, so the sensor has to “see” the beam to be effective. It has to be aimed straight ahead, be parallel to the road and have an unobstructed view. This often poses a unique set of challenges for the installer. Here at JML Audio, we never cut any corners on the installation since we want you to get all the performance possible.
Rear Sensors Blend In Perfectly
In the rear of the vehicle, we installed two more sensors on this P85D. The technicians bolted the radar receiver to the metal substructure on the driver’s side rear of the car. Once the rear bumper was reinstalled, the sensor was completely hidden from view. We installed a single G5 laser defuser on a color-matched license plate frame that looks almost invisible to the average person.
Interior Integration
At this point, we moved our attention to the inside of the vehicle. We chose the center console as our location for the controller, flushing it into the carbon fiber overlay. The result was an easy-to-access spot that looked like a factory option from Tesla. When it came time to mount the indicator lights, we chose a spot above the gauge screen, flushing them into the bezel that fits around it.
When the client experiences a front threat, the left indicator goes off. Should he experience a rear threat, the right indicator illuminates. We also installed a hidden speaker that announces the threat audibly and gets used when changing settings on the system.
Any Good Install Requires Testing
One way that we separate our systems from the competition is by testing the finished product. Our company has made the significant investment in both a radar and laser testing device, ensuring our clients get maximum performance.
Window Film Dramatically Lowers Heat
While we had the vehicle, our team installed heat-reflective window film on all windows, reducing the sun’s heat by a significant amount. Our film also blocks 99.9% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, which are known to cause skin cancer. This benefit alone is a great reason to have JML Audio treat your windows.
The Final Touch
At the end of the installation, our team performed a full-service detail on the vehicle, making it look like the day it came off the showroom floor. We cleaned and protected everything from the exterior paint and trim areas, to every nook and cranny in the interior.
Client Pleased With Tesla P85D Laser And Radar System
When the client came to pick up his vehicle, he marveled at how our work made the product look factory-installed. As we walked him around the vehicle and showed him the interior, he kept nodding his head in approval. He loved the look of the window film and detail job, thinking he was getting a brand-new car back. That made our day.
