A client from St. Charles contacted JML Audio about adding a custom-installed laser and radar detector to a 2015 Acura TLX. We set a time to get together with the client for a consultation. When he arrived, we looked over the car together and listened as he explained his goals for the upgrade. Our team offered our own suggestions based on our years of experience, and together we came up with a solution tailored to his needs. At that point, we set up a time for him to drop off his vehicle.
Custom K40 Laser And Radar System
For this Acura, we chose the K40 RL360i system, which includes front and rear radar receivers — a big help when you are trying to understand where a threat is coming from. We have seen radar run in two spots near each other, time and again, where a client who only has a front radar receiver might make a bad judgment call that results in a ticket.
Securely Mounted Radar Receivers
In typical JML fashion, we removed the bumpers of the vehicle and made custom aluminum mounting brackets to bolt the radar receivers securely into place in the optimum position. We never use tape or Velcro, or screw into plastic, because those techniques would make long-term reliability suspect.
Front And Rear Laser Protection
We also added a total of three G5 laser defusers to the system. In the front of the vehicle, we placed two defusers strategically in perfect alignment with the road ahead, and made sure they had no obstructions in front of them. Laser defusers are an incredible technology because they protect you from a laser speeding ticket. When the defusers sense they have been shot by laser, they immediately fire back powerful beams of light that the laser gun doesn’t understand, so it can’t get a reading on your vehicle. This gives you precious time to slow down and avoid a costly ticket. Since laser is working off light beams, aiming of the defusers is critical, as is making sure nothing is blocking their direct view of the laser gun aimed at them.
In the rear of the vehicle, we added a single G5 defuser on a license plate mount, centered on the vehicle.
Stealth Interior Modifications
When it came time for the installation work inside the vehicle, we went with a completely stealth look. The audible speaker is completely hidden from view, yet easily heard by the driver. The system also comes with indicator lights for both front and rear threats. In this vehicle, we hid them behind the turn signal indicators. When a front threat happens, the left turn signal blinks blue. In the event of a rear threat, the right turn signal blinks blue. This makes for an easily seen indication for the driver that looks completely stock when not in use. We placed the remote control for the K40 system in a convenient spot in the center console.
Final Testing Of The Acura TLX Radar And Laser System
Once our team was finished with the installation, we tested every sensor in the vehicle with our in-house radar and laser testing tools. We do this kind of testing because we think a client who is making a significant investment in a custom-installed laser and radar detector should get all the performance available. Testing the system is just one more way we verify the performance.
Level-Three Window Film
In the beginning, when meeting with the client to discuss the upgrades, the concept of window film came up. He chose to have us install our level-three heat reflective film to all of the windows, dramatically lowering the interior temperature in the summer while protecting the occupants from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
